Celebration at Altitude!

2007 National Convention (Aug 28 – Sept 2)

Hosted by
Rocky Mountain & North Central Regions

This will be a special celebration as we commemorate the
20th Anniversary of the 1st National Convention held in San Antonio in 1987.

Share in fun times with friends, experience beautiful scenery that inspired
America the Beautiful and participate in activities that will make you dizzy
with excitement and leave you breathless!
Well, if not the activities - certainly the Altitude!

Accommodations

Due to an early overwhelming response from marketing activities at the 2005 SAFN Convention and numerous Rendezvous articles, very few rooms are available at the host hotel, Antlers Hilton, at the discounted rate of $105 plus tax.  However, the good news is that there are overflow accommodations at the Clarion Hotel Downtown located five minutes from the Antlers Hilton.  The discounted rate for the Clarion is $89 plus tax.  Transportation will be provided between hotels. The Clarion also has shuttle service to and from the Colorado Springs airport.  The Clarion has a dedicated phone line at the airport.

This will be a busy weekend and accommodations will be scarce throughout the city due to the Balloon Classic and the Air Force Academy’s Parents’ weekend.  Therefore, if you have not secured hotel accommodations at either the Antlers Hilton or at the Clarion, it is imperative that you register NOW.  You may contact the Antlers directly, at 1-866-299-4602 or 1-800-445-8667 and provide them with the registration code of SOANA.  If discounted rates are not available at the Antlers and you do not want to pay the going rate then you should contact the Clarion Hotel Downtown at 1-800-477-8610 or 719-471-8680 and reference the Society of Air Force Nurses.  You should also request “courtyard view,” though the hotel may not be able to guarantee this room assignment.  Discounted rates are available from August 25 through Sept 5th. If you have any difficulty with registration at either hotel, please contact Pat Chappell at 719-262-9268 or by email at patscina@aol.com.

Note:  If you currently have reservations at the Antlers Hilton, please do not alter those reservations.  We have contracted a specific number of room nights and if we fall below the contracted room nights, the Society is significantly penalized financially.

Activities/Tours

Thursday evening, enjoy a vivacious welcoming reception with your friends as you can hear delightful background music that reflects a little of the big band era of WW II as well as 50-60s pop.
Heavy Hor d’oeuvres
Two no-host Bars

Friday luncheon should bring a lot of laughter as we enjoy a humorous skit from some of our founding members.

Friday evening plan on attending a relaxed “cowboy” supper at an actual working mountain cattle ranch (Flying W) located within Colorado Springs. Food is good as well as “foot-stomping” entertainment. The ranch also contains some neat shops as well as scenery.
Western attire should you so desire

Saturday evening enjoy an eloquent banquet with entertainment that should get your vocal chords going!

Colorado and Colorado Springs truly have an abundance of activities and potential tour opportunities from which to choose.

Visit YOUR Air Force Academy, home to 4000 Air Force Academy Cadets.  See the internationally renowned 17-spire Cadet Chapel, the Visitors Center, WW II Flight Nurse Memorial and other facilities on the 18,000 acres of beautiful Academy grounds.

Also visit the beautiful red sandstone rock formations of the Garden of the Gods, including “Balanced Rock” and “Kissing Camels”. The tour is topped off by lunch (included) at the Academy’s world-class golf course.

You will have an opportunity to go to the top of Majestic Pikes Peak (beauty surrounding this mountain inspired America the Beautiful) At an elevation of over 14,000 feet you will have a 4 state vista. The views are breathtaking – both figuratively and literally! En route back, once down from the Peak, you will have an opportunity to have lunch and shop in the Victorian town of Manitou Springs.

There will also be an opportunity to ride the Georgetown/Silver Plume Narrow Gage Railroad to quaint Silver Plume and a Silver Mine or to simply enjoy and shop in historic and quaint Georgetown.

Enjoyment of food and an open bar as you experience a scenic train ride to the Royal Gorge Bridge (world highest suspension bridge) may also be one of your choices.

For the shoppers in the crowd, shopping tours of Old Colorado City (original Capital of the Colorado territory) and Victorian town of Manitou Springs could be available.

Bus tours of the city of Colorado Springs as well as self-directed walking tours will be available.

Note. Some tour availability is dependent on a minimum of 20 participants

Colorado Springs will also be hosting the annual Colorado Balloon Classic during your time here. Beautiful sight and close to your hotel for your very early enjoyment. Not as big as Albuquerque but quite impressive >100 balloons.

Time of the year should bring you very pleasant weather and beautiful blue skies.
